Albany wins 2015 America East Conference basketball tournament on Peter Hooley's buzzer-beater
Albany has won its
third straight America East Championship, stunning Stony Brook with a
come-from-behind victory on a late three-point shot. The Great Danes won
51-50 Saturday, clinching a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Stony Brook
led 20-16 at the end of a sluggish first half in which the two teams
combined to shoot 25.9 percent from the floor (the 11 a.m. tip-off
likely didn't help). Junior forward Jameel Warney led the way for the Seawolves, with 12 points and nine rebounds in the first half.
Warney kept up that pace in the second half, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Carson Puriefoy was also key for the Seawolves, scoring 23 points with six rebounds. Albany's leading scorer was forward Sam Rowley, who scored 14 on 21 shot attempts.
Stony Brook made just one of
two free throw attempts on their last possession of the game, giving
Albany one last chance to tie it up or win it down 62-60. Peter Hooley made a three-pointer jumper from the top of the key with around two seconds remaining, giving the Great Danes the win.
